7 Tips to Becoming a Better Driver

Road rage got you red in the face? Had a recent close call on the freeway? There are lots of reasons people want to learn to be better drivers. But, usually, people just want to make sure they are driving safely so they can avoid potential accidents.

Often times as adults, we forget the basics of safe driving and act like nothing bad can happen to us. We need to revert back to teen driving safety tips and employ that into our daily routine again.

If you’re looking for a ways to improve your driving skills, give these tips a try.

1) Keep your eyes open.

Most accidents occur when a driver isn’t paying attention. You can avoid this common mistake by staying conscious of your surrounding when you are driving. Scan the road ahead of you constantly, not just for other cars but for pedestrians, kids playing by the side of the road, or other possible hazards. Stay alert, and you’ll greatly improve your driving habits.

2) Don’t beat the light

It’s tempting to dash through that yellow light, but it’s not worth it. Thousands of accidents are caused each year by people who can’t wait any extra couple of minutes and try to beat the yellow light. On average, waiting out a red light will only cost you 1 to 2 extra minutes. It’s not worth getting in an accident over.

3) Be courteous

Be aware of the other drivers around you and recognize when they need to merge, turn, slow down, and more. When you let other drivers into your lane, or simply slow down to let another car by, you’re helping alleviate traffic congestion that can lead to accidents.

4) Calm down

Everyone knows you shouldn’t drive when you are angry, upset, or emotionally distraught. Emotions can impair your judgment while driving, so take a few minutes to cool off before you get behind the wheel. If you suffer from an extreme road rage, practice some calming techniques to cool down before you do something rash. Remember, most people on the road are not out to get you; they’re simply trying to get to their destination just like you.

5) Study up

One of the best ways to become a better driver is to give yourself a refresher on your state’s driving laws. Your local DMV should have booklets or training manuals you can have for free. You might be surprised at what you’ve forgotten since driver’s ed.

6) Wear a seat belt

This has less to do with driving safely than it does with preventing injury, but it’s still a good idea. You have a much better chance of surviving a crash if you are wearing a seat belt. And clicking in your seat belt before you leave the driveway is also a subtle reminder to drive safely.

7) Focus on the journey

Driving is much more enjoyable if you focus on the journey and not the destination. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going so that you won’t be in a hurry. Take some time to enjoy the driving experience and you’ll be a much better driver.

Becoming a better driver isn’t just about protecting yourself, it’s also about making sure everyone arrives at their destinations safely and ignoring any distractions along the way.

Follow the above tips, and you’ll make everyone’s driving experience better.
