Sport-Specific Training Tips

Even the greatest athletes must set aside personal time to work on refining their game. Athletes must run, weight train and work on fundamentals if they want to be successful. If you play soccer, softball or football try some of these training tips during your next workout.

Soccer

Soccer training requires mastery of footwork, shooting and passing. Practice drills are necessary. While you go though drills, if you are not thinking about how they apply during a game then the exercise is lost. It may seem redundant to dribble around cones but try picturing yourself weaving around opponents and think of ways this drill will benefit you in game situations.
Here are a few practice drills to try:

Dribbling Drills: The ability to comfortably handle the ball in all situations defines a successful soccer player. These drills deal with footwork and ball handling during different game situations.

Conditioning: These four conditioning drills focus on the sprint and change of direction aspects of soccer.

Individual Drills: It may sound simple, but kicking a ball against a wall can work wonders. It teaches you ball placement and control and lets you improve your kicking ability with both feet.

Softball

If you looking for a way to improve your softball workouts, training can be done in your backyard with a hitting tee and a net. Refine your hitting abilities by doing different hitting drills off a tee. Try moving around the plate and forcing yourself to hit “inside” or “outside” pitches, or place a bat behind your back and while holding it with your arms, hit the ball off the tee. Working off of a tee can be one of the most beneficial training methods.

If you cannot find anybody to play catch with, consider purchasing a pitchback net. Pitchbacks allow you to keep your arm in shape while forcing you to work on fielding technique because the ball is returned either as a grounder or a pop fly.

Football

Unlike soccer and softball, football is the ultimate team game. The demands differ drastically for each position and a blown assignment by one player can be catastrophic. Because of the game’s team aspect, football training is best done with a couple of guys. If you are a quarterback, wide receiver or defensive back, work together going over your team’s passing tree. This will help the quarterback and receivers work on their timing and the defensive backs will be able to practice technique.

If you want to better develop your skills individually, it’s best to concentrate on improving your weight training and conditioning. If you do not know proper lifting or conditioning techniques enlist the help of your coach or work with a personal trainer. Your coach will likely have a background in both of these elements and he can give you a specific workout regimen that would help your game.
